What does an Automotive Service Manager do?

An automotive service manager works in the repair department of a car sales dealership. Reporting to a general manager while overseeing garage staff and equipment is a common workplace situation for vehicle service managers. Communicating with customers and solving problems are other main responsibilities.

Service managers must ensure that customers are satisfied. In the case of car repair managers, providing service that's highly appreciated by customers can be challenging, since negotiations about costs and completion deadlines may be heated at times. Sometimes, automotive repair customers disagree with charges for labor or parts, as well as the amount of time their vehicle takes to be repaired. The automotive service manager must keep a friendly tone while working with the customer to create a positive outcome.

In their communications with customers, automotive service managers represent mechanics' work. They must oversee their staff of mechanics to ensure that quality repairs are being carried out according to company policies. Automotive service managers are responsible for maintaining safety procedures in the garage that comply with company policies as well as local, regional and national laws. For instance, car maintenance waste fluids that may be harmful to the environment, such as the old fluid from an oil change, must be disposed of properly. @Grivusangel -- I imagine that's a lot like being a doctor. If people know you fix -- or used to fix -- cars, they will want to be your friend!

Like any manager, the service department manager can make things really good or really bad for his or her employees -- and customers. I will say that most reputable dealerships don't keep bad service managers around very long, because it can cost them down the road in money and even lawsuits, if the manager won't work with a customer to resolve a problem. People have been known to take dealerships to court to solve problems -- and they tend to win.

I have a friend who just retired as an automotive service manager. He has been a mechanic all his life, and he still works on cars on a private basis, so I usually have him do anything that needs to be done on my car. I trust him that he knows what he's doing.

He has a professional scan tool so he can read the trouble codes on my car's computer, and can either fix the problem himself, or recommend I take it to the shop.

He also knows which mechanics in town are worth giving my business to, and that's valuable knowledge.
